Hello!
I decided to set up a blog for our little son Lucas to keep our loved ones and friends back in Singapore updated on him.
It seems rather a pity that loved ones back home - his grandmas, grandpas, uncles and aunties will not be able to actually see Little Lucas grow up in the first year of his life. We still have 1 yr 7 mths to go before we return to Singapore.. and by then, Lucas would already be a big boy, running around. Loved ones will miss seeing the milestones in the first year of his life.
I hope I will faithfully be able to update this blog though. :)
Lucas was born 10 March 2010 via emergency C-section. Our boy was actually supposed to be an 11 March baby, as my Gynae - Dr Pittard, had arranged for me to be induced on 10 March ( @ 39 weeks) and did not expect Lucas to be out til 11 March as the induction was expected to be a long drawn process.
I had to be induced because I was diagnosed with Pregnancy-induced Hypertension. The 3rd trimester was really not a very good one for me. I was pricked and poked countless times and had to do many urine tests because of my pregnancy condition, which they considered to be a high risk one. I was returning to the hospital almost 2-3 times every week to be monitored and pricked with needles. In the end, they decided the best option is to take Baby out at 39 weeks to stop my blood pressure from going up any higher.
So this is what happened on 10 March.
4pm: Admitted into hospital to start cervical ripening and induction process
4.15pm: Hooked up to CTG, contractions and regular. BB's heartbeat is good at around 130-160 beats per min.
4.45pm: A ballon Foley catherer was inserted into cervix to ripen it as my body was not exactly ready for labor yet. Doc failed to insert it the first time, cervix too tight
5pm: Doc tried for a second time using spectrums - inserted 2 metal bars into to hold up vaginal walls first (OUCH!!). Again, attempt to insert ballon failed.
5.15pm: Doc decided to try and insert the induction pill called cevidil instead to ripen the cervix. IV drip is set up.
5.45pm: Doc insert pill. Right after he inserted the pill, he joked with hubby and my mom that they could leave me here and go grab some dinner cos I'll be waiting for a long time and won't be able to move off from my bed.
5.46pm: Right after Doc finished his sentence, BB's heartbeart suddenly drops to the 40s and the alarm sounded!! Doc quickly takes the ultrasound to scan for BB, flipping me left and right. The midwives and nurses rushed in and there is a flurry of activity around me. I went into a daze. I was given a shot in the arm to double my heart rate as well and I was shivering like mad. Doc tries to bring BB's heartbeat back up to normal. He takes out the pill. I could hear him asking for the C-section team to be on standby immediately as they were gonna push me in for an emerg C-sect any moment.
6pm: Doc manages to bring BB's heartbeat back up to normal after taking the pill out.
6.10pm: Doc says he cant explain what happened to me and the BB and why I reacted so badly to the pill. He has never had anyone react so poorly before. But he says its a sign that BB prob wun be able to tolerate labor, and recommend a c-sect instead.
6.30pm: The C-sect team is called in to prep me for C-sect. Anesthesialogist discovers that I just had a super full lunch at 2pm. Suggest to Doc to do the C-sect at 10pm instead as worried of how i might react to the spinal block, which is the anesthesia given into the spine.
10pm: I was prepped and then led into the Operating Theatre for C-sect. There was a roomful of people. 3 surgeons, 4 midwives and the anestheologist
10.15pm: Given spinal block to numb lower half of my body. I was really freaking out at that moment. A sharp shot in the back, and then the operation started.
10.29pm: BB Lucas is out, weighing at 2.6kg.
Everything happened so fast. I did not even go through the whole labor process. I did not have the chance to feel contractions etc. But aftre the op, once the anesthesia wore off, Oh boy! The pain from the wound was really bad!!! 3 layers of stitches. Hurt like hell.
But seeing Lucas made everything better. I was still in pain 1 week after the op, couldn't walk around much. I was discharged from hospital after 48 hrs, went home to rest. I had 1 week to recover before I took over some of the taking-care-of-baby chores from Mom and Hubby.
Its been 2 weeks since the birth. Wound is well on recovery; most of the pain from it is gone. Lucas has been quite good, except at night, he doesn't sleep much, cries for milk every 3 hrs. Hubby and I hardly get much sleep these days. Mom is around, but we wanna take care of BB as much as we can now, if not once Mom goes back to SIN, we'll be mostly on our own.
My dad will also be here for 1 mth after mom goes back. Grandpa will get to see Baby Lucas!
